Time is of the Essence
“By Time. Indeed, mankind is in loss. Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds and enjoin the truth and enjoin patience.” [Surah Asr]
The holidays have come and gone, and whilst most of us have spent this time abroad, with family and friends, it is important to also remember that this time can never come back. A day, an hour, a minute passing is one moment closer to the time when we will meet our Lord. We should therefore not waste our time but ensure we are doing all we can to remember Him in our busy daily lives.
Imam Shafi’ee (rhm) stated that no one realises the importance of Surah al-Asr. If they did, it would enable them to understand the meaning of life and be successful in this world and the hereafter. Firstly, Allah takes an oath using time. This shows us the importance of time as He only takes oaths on that of his creation which is of paramount importance. Then Allah explains to us that all of mankind is in loss – meaning unsuccessful. But the key to achieving Jannah and to be exempted from this loss is to believe, do good deeds and to encourage each other to be truthful and patient. If we bring this into our lives, then not only are we reforming ourselves but also those around us which is one of the fundamental teachings of Islam – “to enjoin good and discourage evil.”
So, let us all make a concentrated effort that while we are engaged in our daily lives, we will also follow the criteria set out in this beautiful Surah of the Quran and not let a moment go to waste. God willing, we will all be successful in achieving our ultimate destination – Jannah, Ameen.
